Mrs. Delores Mercer Obituary

Delores Pembrook Mercer was born October 26, 1955, to the late Emmett Ramsey & Gloria Pembrook. Dee, as she was affectionately called, departed this life on May 27, 2025 at UNC Healthcare Systems with by her children by her side.

Delores graduated from Lutcher High School in 1974. Upon graduation she enlisted in the United States Army. She served for 4 years as a Motor Transportation Operator and Supply Specialist. During her service she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. She oversaw the security of the military vehicles, weapons, ammunition, and automated weapons systems. Her assignments were at the 172nd Infantry Brigade of Fort Richardson, Alaska, and Charlie Company of Fort Knox, Kentucky’s 75th Special Troop Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Delores later in life pursued her career in early childhood education. She worked as a substitute teacher for Nash Rocky Mount Public Schools. She went on to work for the N.E.E.D. Head Start program as a teacher for 17 years.

Delores was a loving and caring person, willing to help anyone in need. She was known for her energetic spirit and quick wit. She had a passion for teaching, writing, sewing, but most of all gardening. She loved southern soul music, dancing, and social gatherings. She enjoyed quality time with her family and close friends.

Delores was preceded in death by her first husband John Sivels Mercer Jr., Albert Mercer, her son, John Mercer III.; her father Emmet Ramsey; her mother Gloria Pembrook; her grandmother Olivia Pembrook; and a sister Betty Pembrook.

Delores memories will forever be cherished by her children, Parish Clark of Greenville, NC, Toriano Clark of Gramercy, LA, Nikki Mercer of Rocky Mount, NC, Sonya Kalnbach (Alex) of Virginia Beach; her grandchildren; Christopher, Aniyah, Shelbi, Kallum, Toriana & Tyla; her sisters, Carolyn Gray & Emma Pembrook; her brothers, Emmet, Collis, Randolph & Johnny; her adoptive, Mother Alma Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, & friends.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
