Juanita Blount Spencer, a cherished pillar of the Bath community and devoted matriarch, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on June 11, 2024, at the age of 94.
Born on December 26, 1929, in Winsteadville, NC, she was a daughter of the late William Herbert Blount and Joanna Authur Blount.
Growing up in a lively household with six brothers and six sisters, Juanita was nurtured in an environment where her parent's home was always open, frequently filled with guests for dinners and fellowship, fostering her love for serving others.
After attending Pantego High School in Pantego, NC, Juanita met the love of her life, John Warren Spencer. They married on July 12, 1948, in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Together, they raised three sons—John Tilmon Spencer, Charles Wayne Spencer, and James Kelvin Spencer—fostering a home brimming with love, laughter, and the delicious aromas of her renowned cooking, as she often hosted family, friends, and her adopted daughters and sons in kind, Tina, Diane, Hatsy, Sarah, Charles, and Randy.
Juanita's professional life was marked by a series of roles that showcased her dedication and resilience, including work as a domestic worker, positions at the Holiday Inn, Hamilton Beach, Blue Channel Seafood Processing Co., and Autumnfield Nursing Home.
A devout Christian, Juanita was baptized early in life and remained a lifelong member of her family church, Holly Grove Disciples of Christ Church in Belhaven, NC. Her deep faith earned her the revered title of the oldest Mother of the Church. Additionally, she was an active member of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation and an honorary member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Her hobbies included crocheting beautiful blankets and crafting exquisite meals—favorites included fish, crabs, and breakfasts. Her passion for learning was evident in her enjoyment of writing stories and poetry, through which she shared her wisdom.
In her final days, the appearance of a white dove resting on her hospital windowsill symbolized the peace and grace that Juanita always embodied. Her love for the Lord, for flowers, and for life itself will forever serve as a guiding light to all who knew her. Juanita's legacy is one of love and faith. She is survived by her grandson, Jalin Michael Spencer; her one
living sister, Geraldine Blount Dubose; one living sister-in-law Barbara A. Blount, her adopted daughters and sons in kind, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband John Warren Spencer, their three sons, and all of her other siblings.
Her life's devotion, service to God and mankind will be celebrated 3:00 PM Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Holly Grove Disciples of Christ Church.
Burial will follow in the Holly Grove D.O.C. Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the People's Memorial Chapel.
