Deacon William Barnes, Jr. Obituary

William Edward Barnes, Jr. was born May 27, 1960 to the late William Barnes, Sr. and Dorothy Mae Barnes House in Greenville. North Carolina. He departed this earthly life Monday May 25, 2026 at the age of 65. He would have celebrated his 66th birthday on Wednesday May 27th. William was affectionately known by many as “Lil’ June” or “June”. He was large in statue, but a “gentle giant” with a heart of gold.

William was a proud 1978 graduate of J.H. Rose High School of Greenville where he excelled as an outstanding basketball player earning numerous awards and trophies throughout his athletic career. Following high school, he continued his education and athletic pursuits at Chowan College and the University of Charleston in West Virginia.

June was a dedicated hard worker, known for his strong work ethic and dependable spirit, he earned the respect of everyone he worked with. Oftentimes, he was requested for deliveries. He was employed for many years as a Truck Driver with Industrial Distributors, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and Garris Evans. Lumber Company.

Most importantly, Deacon Barnes loved the Lord. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and faithfully served as a member of Mt. Calvary Church in Greenville before moving his membership to Phillippi Church of Christ, where he served faithfully as a deacon until his health began to fail. Serving God and helping others brought him great joy and purpose. He gave respect and earned respect of all that knew him.

June was a devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and family man. Yes, he was a sports person. A diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, win, lose or draw. He enjoyed cheering for Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James and UNC Tar Heels basketball teams. He also loved gospel, and “ole school” music, treasured spending time with family and friends.

Those who knew June will remember him as kind, trustworthy, compassionate, and truly a people person. His warm smile, gentle spirit, and encouraging presence touched countless lives.

William loved his family. His precious memories will forever be cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 25 years, Carroll and beloved son, William Noah Barnes, of the home. Brother Walter Barnes (Lauretta) of Raleigh, NC, sisters Prophetess Brenda Adams and Myrtle Barnes of Greenville, NC. Aunt Edith Barnes and his “sister/cousin” Sheree Pearson of Greenville, NC. Cherished in-laws, Kareen Windley (Leon) of Kinston, NC. Angela Worrell; and Evangelist Tereasa Staton (Elder Clayton Staton), all of Greenville, NC. Richard Worrells of Eureka, NC, Alexander Dawson of New Bern, NC, Christopher Worrell (Darlene) of Albuquerque, NM, and William Worrell of Milano, Texas. He deeply loved his nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church families & shared close relationships with each one of them.

June was blessed with many devoted friends whom he loved dearly. Though too many to name individually, Jimmie Swinson, Deacon Wilbert Little, Vickie Hawkins, Brenda Gray, Willie May, Pastor Eddie Grimes, Jeff Credle, William Spell, Shawn Little, neighbors, James & Cheryl Hammiel, Jewell Gardner and Vera Martin, your unwavering friendship will not be forgotten.

Deacon Barnes leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, strength, merriment, and kindness that will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Well done, thy good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:23
